The Organic Mechanics Soil Company is committed to being an environmentally conscious and sustainable company. Our potting soil is peat-free, utilizing compost instead of a non-renewable resource like peat. Much like old growth forest, peat is harvested from virgin land.

Peat is a common ingredient in most potting soils. Each year almost 32 million cubic yards of peat are harvested from virgin land for horticultural use. Imagine 10 football fields covered in a pile of peat 5 stories tall! Harvesting peat destroys one-of-a-kind ecosystems for both flora and fauna, and is particularly damaging to insect and migratory songbird populations. England has run out of peat for horticultural use, their entire horticultural industry is going peat-free by 2010. Ireland will stop harvesting peat by 2020.

Yet another reason to go peat-free...purchasing Organic
Mechanics® brand potting soil supports a local product
produced and delivered using a minimal amount of fossil
fuels. Alternatively, peat based potting soils travel
thousands of miles, requiring hundreds of gallons of
diesel gasoline to deliver these peat based soils to your
local garden center. Our delivery trucks use Bio-diesel
fuel made from waste oil. Our potting soil manufacturing
equipment also utilizes Bio-diesel.
