Meet the Judges

Rob Cardillo Formerly the Director of Photography at Organic Gardening Magazine, Rob Cardillo has been photographing gardens, plants and the people that tend them for nearly twenty years. He is a member and past Regional Director of the American Garden Writers Association and serves on the Education Committee for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

His award-winning work is published frequently in magazines, websites and catalogs and he has two new books due this year including one on Chanticleer, the well-known pleasure garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

A popular speaker, Rob lectures and holds workshops on the art of garden photography.

Tom Davis
After retiring as a Presbyterian pastor, Tom turned his computer hobby into a small business: TeleDavis LLC, specializing in photography, videography, and website design. He is especially dedicated to helping people working in social change to become savvy consumers and producers of digital information. So, through photography, video production, and writing Tom promotes Web literacy at his blog called CyberKen.

Tom lives next to Brandywine Park in Wilmington, Delaware and loves photographing birds there. He volunteers his talents for the Delaware Center for Horticulture, providing images and video to promote their urban greening programs. He also moderates a photography group at Flickr.com called Better Web Pics, and is an avid member of a local club, the Brandywine Photo Collective.


Robert Lyons
Bob is Professor of Landscape Horticulture, Program Director for the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture (in association with Longwood Gardens), and Director of the Center for Public Horticulture at the University of Delaware. He co-founded the Virginia Tech Horticulture Gardens (now the Hahn Horticulture Garden) and served as director of the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University.

A photographer for over 25 years, Bob has published widely in homeowner, commercial, and educational publications. He has exhibited and lectured nationally about horticultural photography, and has received awards from the Garden Writers Association for both his photography and writings. He brings his award-winning teaching style to his photographic workshops emphasizing composition and how to develop an eye for seeing potential photo opportunities.


Rhoda Maurer
Rhoda’s true passions are practical horticulture, photography and a deep love of our natural world. Her career in horticulture and love of the outdoors have encouraged extensive travel, zeal for teaching, and observing small wonders.

Prior to joining the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College in 1998, Rhoda spent a year in England at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden, Wisley. She earned degrees in anthropology and horticulture while living in Seattle, where she also worked for the Elizabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden and owned her own landscape and design business.

Her photographs have been published in various horticultural magazines, journals and local newspapers; used for plant promotion with growers and awards programs; and are regularly featured in Scott Arboretum materials. Eric Zippe
Eric Zippe is a visual artist specializing in fine art and commercial photography. He developed his own style and vision while learning with such notable photographers as Peter Croydon, Jay Maisel, Robert Llewellyn, and Arthur Meyerson. His photo career has been eclectic, encompassing wildlife and travel photography, portraiture, photojournalism, sports and digital photo retouching. Eric's commercial clients include Fila, Budwieser and Mercedes Benz. His work has been published and exhibited internationally, and has won multiple awards.

Eric is an adjunct faculty member at Cecil College in North East, Maryland. He teaches digital imaging, studio photography, and nature and wildlife and travel photography. Many of his students have gone on to become award-winning artists. He is also a founding member of Torchiere Arts LLC, a company specializing in visual arts services, learning, and fine art products.
